TYDAS PRESENTS GREEN-IT DEVICE AT NATIONAL NONPROFIT TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE

Monday, April 27, 2009 - At the annual NTEN technology conference held in San Francisco yesterday, Tydas presented “zero terminal” technology at the leading edge of Green-IT innovation.

The zero-terminal technology allows organizations to replace individual desktop computers with equipment that distributes the underused power of a single desktop PC to many users.

“A zero terminal is a small box about the size of your palm.  Each zero terminal box allows its user to have the same experience as if they were using their own individual computer,” said Marek Biel, Director of Technology Solutions at Tydas, a New York and San Francisco based IT consulting firm.  “But all the users on the system are in fact working from a single host computer.”

Using an ordinary keyboard and monitor each user has access to all the software applications on the host computer and also on the Internet.  “The user really can’t tell the difference,” he said.

Most zero-terminal machines cost less than half the price of a PC.  The devices consume a small fraction of the power used by a desktop computer.  And they are far easier to recycle and dispose of.

The zero terminals are also a good example of the efficiencies inherent in virtual technology.  “The ability to run multiple operating systems on one computer, whether a server or a PC, can drive significant savings in many situations.  If an organization is planning to buy or replace multiple desktops, they should at least be aware of this technology,” Mr. Biel said.

Tydas chose the annual NTEN IT conference for nonprofit organizations to demonstrate the technology “because the nonprofit sector is receptive to ecological reasoning.  People here are eager to learn about genuinely green initiatives that can reduce their carbon footprint and save money at the same time,” said David Irons, marketing director at Tydas.
